Rail Trail – Family Walk and Steam Train

Take the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Grosmont to Goathland (Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film), then walk back, mostly downhill on good paths. or do it the opposite way round if you prefer a harder walk.

Distance: 5.5km 3.5 miles

Elevation: Up 28m, down 133m. Long, slightly downhill most of the way with a small climb at the beginning and the end. Moderate difficulty due to the length.

Kids will love: The steam train (or heritage diesel), the train station, Hogsmead, from the first Harry Potter film. Rivers, woodland, traffic free path, hearing and seeing steam trains across the fields chugging past. Sheep, they are in the village of Goathland walking free.

Pushchairs? It’s mainly good gravel paths, there is a steeper more challenging hill at the Grosmont end but still possible.

Parking: Pay-and-display car parks in Grosmont

Dogs: Yes dogs are allowed on both the walk and the trains.

Link with: A day out in Goathland (famous for Heartbeat a TV series set in the 1960s) There is a playground near the village hall and various shops and a tea room.
